What is the opportunity?

This opportunity is a 15-month contract with full-time hours. The Senior Manager, Tax, is the subject matter expert and principal resource within the National Tax Services (NTS) team on all technical taxation matters related to estate and trust account administration. You will be responsible for supporting Royal Trust relationship managers in providing efficient, accurate, and quality client service related to tax return preparation. You will have oversight for the management and mitigation of tax risk both at the account level and at the business level by acting as a point of escalation for Royal Trust staff on all substantive tax matters. You will also be accountable for staying abreast of Canadian income tax legislative developments impacting the administration of estates and trusts.

What will you do?

  • Act as subject matter expert and principal resource to the business on taxation matters and provide technical support through the delivery of advice, research, and risk analysis
  • Review T1, T1 Final, T3 tax returns, and T3010 information returns
  • Responsible for the tax management and tax preparation of a book of complex estate and trust accounts
  • Remain current on changes to Canadian and Quebec income tax legislation impacting estates and trusts and clearly communicate changes to staff
  • Responsible for training and developing staff on all substantive and technical tax matters and for working with the Associate Director, NTS, Taxation Advisory Group, Professional Development, and Sales Enablement to develop and deliver effective and superior tax training and materials to staff
  • Develop best practices for the minimization of tax risk at the account level for implementation by the tax team and regional staff
  • Manage and oversee projects and initiatives related to improving the efficiency of tax compliance processes
  • Works in partnership with other business units and colleagues, including external professional advisors, to ensure a seamless experience for shared clients/relationships and a timely resolution of tax matters

What do you need to succeed?

Must-have

  • 10 to 15 years of related experience, preferably with current public accounting practice experience
  • CPA designation with In-Depth Tax Program or Master of Taxation
  • Knowledge of taxation requirements for estate and trust products
  • Technological literacy
  • Bilingualism (English and French) required, as you will regularly serve our clients and do business with RBC partners and/or employees across Canada with English and French speaking needs

Nice-to-have

  • Knowledge of Common Law and Civil Code as it relates to the Estate, Trust, and Agency business
  • U.S. tax experience, an asset
  • Experience in the financial services and securities industry, including trading, settlement, and corporate change announcement processes
  • Experience in people management and development, coaching, leading a team
