The salary range for the position of Junior Bookkeeper is $50,000 - $60,000 annually.

Job Description

The Junior Bookkeeper role is responsible for accurately processing financial transactions of the Firm, reporting and reconciling. This position will engage in cross-functional support with other administrative members and departments, and will assist and cover all accounting staff as necessary in order to provide accurate information for both internal and external reporting.

A good knowledge of the accounting function within a computerized accounting system is necessary. A good knowledge of Law Society regulations with regards to Trust Accounting is also required.

Key Responsibilities:

ACCOUNTING

  • Assist Accounting Supervisor in daily accounting and reconciling to complete necessary reports;
  • Ensure accurate entry and posting of daily electronic wire requests;
  • Accurate completion of approved write offs for Accounts Receivable and Work in Progress as directed;
  • Administer the petty cash system;
  • Reconcile all corporate credit card purchases and Transaction Levy Surcharges to monthly statements;
  • Responsible for reconciling and remitting HST and source deductions;
  • Assist in account processing by reviewing and verifying the modified prebill;
  • Assist in resolving errors in the accounting processes;
  • Respond to inquiries and reports from co-workers and lawyers;
  • Complete month end bank reconciliation within 7 days after month end;
  • Provide temporary relief for the Accounting Supervisor during absences;
  • Provide temporary relief for accounting personnel during absences.

TRUST ACCOUNTING

  • Must be familiar with the rules and procedures mandated by the Law Society of Ontario for trust account deposits;
  • Adhere to appropriate trust account controls;

CORPORATE ACCOUNTING

  • Assist in year-end balancing of ESSEMM Professional Services Inc. and intercompany accounts.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

  • Keeps abreast of any changes in specialty area and is quickly able to adapt procedures to suit;
  • Fosters an environment where other staff feel comfortable asking for assistance;
  • Exceptional attitude and work ethic;
  • Willingness to assist others voluntarily or as requested in a team environment;
  • Resourceful, highly motivated and able to adapt and learn quickly in applying new technical and professional skills;
  • Willingness and ability to support and enhance the Firm's presence and goals;
  • Performs such further and other duties as may be assigned and/or required from time to time.

Qualifications

  • Completion of formal cost accounting courses at the college level or equivalent work experience;
  • Minimum of 5 years' experience in legal account environment preferred;
  • Excellent communication skills, problem solving skills and interpersonal relations is required;
  • Advanced computer skills are required with Microsoft suite of programs, experience with Excel and PC Law is essential;
  • Must be able to work independently, multi-task, and prioritize assignments;
  • Demonstrates willingness and ability to resolve routine situations using tact, judgement and diplomacy;
  • Must be able to meet daily, weekly and monthly deadlines while working with regular interruptions;
  • Organizational skills must be exceptional;
