Your Opportunity

Reporting to the Coordinator, Restoration and Development Monitoring, this position will implement overarching program direction provided by the Coordinator and lead planning, coordination, and development of the field based FFS Program/Watershed Monitoring Program. The Monitoring Lead participates fully in field data collection, ecological inventories, and monitoring in accordance with monitoring strategies for the watershed and CH lands.

  • Support development of overall program direction and identification of monitoring needs and methods assessments
  • Lead planning, coordination, and scheduling of the monitoring field schedule
  • Support the preparation of various project correspondence including project briefs and backgrounders, external communications, and reports of a general and technical nature, and track project progress
  • Prepare timely and accurate project progress updates to the Coordinator
  • Inventory, maintain, and inspect equipment necessary to conduct field work, and identify equipment needs
  • Provide recommendations to the Manager and Coordinator regarding equipment needs and arrange all details related to samples to be processed (e.g., chain of custody documents for water quality)
  • With the Coordinator, prepare field manuals for all programs and maintain them in an accessible and discoverable archive on SharePoint for field procedures. Write post-program reviews for the field manuals as appropriate
  • Support the Coordinator with sampling permit application and permit report submission
  • Undertake selected literature reviews, data analysis and reporting (e.g., graphs, calculations, and statistical analysis
  • Review internal reports and provide advice concerning water quality or ecological implications
  • Identify, assess and pilot new tools and technologies for collecting field data

Your Qualifications

  • Degree or diploma from a post-secondary institution in biology, ecology, natural resources management or similar discipline with a minimum of 4 years' experience
  • Broad experience performing ecological monitoring using standardized protocols
  • Experience coordinating multiple, concurrent field programs
  • Experience training and supervising field staff during data collection
  • Experience in air photo interpretation, GIS and GPS
  • Knowledge of relevant federal and provincial legislation (e.g., Conservation Authorities Act, Endangered Species Act, Species at Risk Act, Migratory Birds Convention Act, etc.)
  • Excellent organization and time management skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with other department teams and across several departments as well as with external agencies.
  • Class 2 backpack electrofishing certification
  • First Aid and CPR certification
  • Natural Heritage Information Centre Data Sensitivity Training
