About the role

Shopify's Credit Risk team is responsible for identifying and mitigating financial losses for merchants processing on the Shopify Payments gateway, all while supporting the growth of the trustworthy and sustainable businesses on our platform.

To support our mandate we are looking to add a Merchant Credit Risk Analyst to join our team. You will be a subject matter expert on all things merchant credit risk for merchants processing on Shopify's Payments gateway. From identifying risk vectors to keeping up to date on emerging trends and industry best practices, you will be responsible for contributing to Shopify's credit risk policies and monitoring to create a trustworthy product and mitigate financial losses.

In this role, you'll be responsible for:

  • Reviewing cases generated by models and rules, analyzing signals to identify, prevent, and mitigate merchant credit risk losses

  • Working directly with merchants to address concerns, collect information, and provide support or clarification through email

  • Ensuring a low-friction experience for merchants while balancing risk and reward

  • Effectively manage multiple tasks of varying complexity under time constraints

Qualifications

  • Experience in merchant risk analysis within the payment processing and e-commerce industry

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and conceptualization skills, with the ability to think creatively and analytically to connect disparate data points

  • Proven ability to implement mitigation strategies, while carefully minimizing impact on legitimate merchants

  • Deep understanding of various business models and their unique risk profiles each presents

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills. This means you have the ability to communicate with a wide variety of audiences about complex situations using plain language.

  • Experience handling high-value processing and high-visibility accounts

  • Demonstrated understanding of chargeback processes, including root causes, money movement, and mitigation techniques

  • Capability to proactively recognize and provide feedback concerning rules, processes, and trends.

  • Comfort with ambiguity and obscurity. We're operating in uncharted waters, and the existing frameworks aren't always applicable

It would be great if you had experience with:

  • Familiarity with SQL and reporting tools

  • Experience in financial underwriting or portfolio management

  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate on cross-functional projects

  • A background in crafting and/or improving policies and procedures

The right person should have a proven track record of solving ambiguous problems and getting things done at scale. An entrepreneurial spirit and ability to thrive in a startup environment are non-negotiables.
